The wonderful thing about SCALI is that every child has a different journey and path to success. We therefore thought it would be interesting for you to have an insight into SCALI and the way in which we support our pupils.
Here are two success stories which follow two separate pupils that we have had in SCALI, AA and BH (names changed), as well as two graphs which track the remarkable progress that both of our students made. We hope you find these interesting!
AA
When AA came to the school, his use of the English language was not how it is now. It was challenging for him to be able to write a paragraph that made sense. Being a keen learner, SCALI worked with him to develop his language. Through a variety of different methods, AA was successful in becoming more confident and was able to become more independent in his work.
Despite facing a huge challenge against him when joining the school in regards to language, AA never gave up. He was a determined learner, needing to see progress of his own and enjoying a bit of healthy competition!
Outside of the classroom, AA would loved to socialise, and was always well-known for putting other people before himself. At SCALI, pupils across all year groups are encouraged to get to know one another – we operate with an open-door policy, and the Centre feels very family-like. AA would be seen chatting to staff and fellow students alike, whether in Year 7 or in Year 11 – something that we in the Centre are proud of.
Overall, AA was a very determined individual. We worked with him to discuss emotional issues from his past, helped him deal with his frustration, worked with him to develop his language, and encouraged him socially. He has since gone on to sit his GCSEs and look round future colleges, of which we have full confidence he will do well in!
BH
BH’s journey was challenging at the start – he used to bite his hands and sing in lessons; two things with would usually be a sign of misbehaviour. But, with BH it was a sign that he was “on edge”. This was coupled up with behaviour that was, at times, extremely challenging. Some of this stemmed from frustration. This was typically because, in a lesson, BH needed to work at a slightly slower pace than the rest of his classmates. In response to this, we worked with BH in class for half a lesson, and then withdrew him to give him one-on-one time for the second half of a lesson – this gave him a really good foundation for independent learning, and he was able to move forward academically.
Outside of the working environment, however, BH would find it difficult to make friends – but over time, once he got to know SCALI and the students and staff within, BH would be more than happy to have a conversation with you, and be able to hold it.
It was fantastic to see BH come out of his shell – one of the things he did was dance when he was happy or when he had done something cheeky, for example! From his time in SCALI, he has made progress in leaps and bounds. We wish him the best of luck with his future at college!
These are success stories surrounding just two of our SCALI pupils, but I hope that what you’ve taken away from these is that we do pride ourselves in closely getting to know the children, with the patience and respect that they deserve. Every student is on a different journey, and together we can help them to succeed over the time that they spend with us.
Thank you for taking the time to read,
The SCALI Team.
